67 Tips For LIving a More SImple LIfe (Frugality Tips)
Before I jump into how to get rid of stress by living a simple life, I want to blatantly state something. WE CAUSE OUR OWN STRESS. It is not what is going on outside of us that causes us stress. It is our reaction to outside events that sets us off.
Knowing this simple fact puts your emotional power in your hands. If someone cuts you off or wrongs you, you don’t HAVE to react in a angry or pissed off manner.
You are programmed to do so because in societies eye, why wouldn’t you act this way? But in order to live a simple life, we need to see that we are the masters of our emotions. That we govern how we react. Realize this and you are over half way there.
Ok now that we knocked that out, here are some great tips to help you find simplicity.
Identify What Is Stressing You Out
First off, we need to evaluate our lives and see what is complex in it? Keep a spiral notebook on you at all times. When something comes up in your life that makes you feel stressed, it is most likely because it too complex for your current existence. Write it down.
This way you see all your trigger points. So then you can start eliminating them. Or simply making these complexities more simple.
Prep Your Meals
There is nothing like thinking about what you are going to cook each meal. It can cause anyone to feel overwhelmed. Especially when first waking up when you have to be at work soon. As well as when you get off of work after a long day and are tired.
Cook simple recipes. Have some hard boiled eggs boiled up. Season a few days of meat overnight and cook it up. Have a rice cooker and cook a few days worth of rice while you are at work. And sautee a medley of veggies that you can throw in with all your meals.
One Task At A Time
We as humans can simply do one thing at a time much better than we can trying to multitask. Our brains just can’t do 2 things at once with complete effectiveness. You can live more simple by taking one thing to completion.
Then the next then the next. And in order to not get overwhelmed by what you are doing, break your tasks down into pieces small enough to where they don’t seem overwhelming.
For example, lets just say for examples purposes you need to write a 400 page book. Well that may seem super overwhelming, but that only means you have to write about a page and a half a day.
Still seem overwhelming? Well how 2 sentences an hour? 1 every half hour? The more you create a sense of smallness to the task the less overwhelmed you feel. Making the entire process more simple.
Find Joy In Simplicity (Reward It)
I want you to reward yourself from now on when you choose simplicity over complexity. Show your mind that you want to seek it. It provides you with happiness. At the end of the day, our mind wants us to be happy.
Show it that we can be happy by seeking simplicity. Our mind will take these instructions and with our Reticular Activating System, will actually bring more simplicity into our lives.
Soak in feelings of enjoyment that you are now choosing simplicity over complexity.
Also, always be asking yourself if your choices are bringing you towards simplicity or complexity. And choose simplicity every time!
Have Short And Long Term Goals
When I say this, I mean 1, 3, 5 and 10 year goals. Most of us have a big vision for our short term existence. But nothing really clear long term. Having a long term vision for your life will make it so you don’t get distracted. And distractions are what causes stress and complexity.
It is like having a great plane that makes stops 72 times going from California to New York. It may still get there, but it is going to take a lot more time and effort.
Also, think like Bill Gates in this regard:
Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.”
Have strong goals that inspire you to take action. But more importantly, I want you to have clear cut purpose for why you want these goals. OUTSIDE yourself. Man can do much more when they are seeking a purpose greater than themselves.
Don’t get overwhelmed by the journey. Have your long term goals. This way you aren’t pressured to fit everything in as fast as possible.
Have a long term mindset brings perseverance. Which can cause you to live a more simple life because you have a one track mind. On just a few things that are important to you.
Commit to these goals by promising yourself you are going to do whatever is necessary. This is what commitment means.
That way people and situations are less likely to distract you because you have a bigger purpose.
Zig Ziglar talks about having definite and precise and clearly defined goals. By having these three elements, we can realize the true power of goal setting. And the potential within you.
Make your list. Set deadlines for reaching each goal. List out the obstacles you must overcome. Make a list of people that can help you along the way and help you get through the bumps along the way.
And list out the skills you have that will help you reach the goals. And skills you may need to develop along the way.
Then get to working those goals!
In order to keep it simple, set goals in the areas of your life that matter most. Financial, spiritual, career, family, social and of course personal.
If you need help crafting good goals and how to achieve them, I wrote an article just for you! Check it out here: How to Set Goals and Achieve Them
Plan Ahead
There is nothing that causes stress more than rushing around. Waiting until the last minute to do something. Cutting things close. Simplicity equates to less stress. You want to give yourself time to get to places.
A little lag time if you will. So if you happen to get behind a slow driver while on the way to your destination, you won’t be tempted to break the law to get past him or her and end up getting a ticket!
It will give you peace of mind and keep you mentally and physically just more relaxed.
Responsibility
Assuming full responsibility for your life puts you at deep place of peace of mind. Which I feel as if simplicity and peace of mind go tightly hand in hand. Assume responsibility for your life and even the people around you. Like a star captain of a professional sports team would. It puts you in charge. Fully. Letting you feel a sense of grounding. Instead of flailing around. Blaming others for past and current mistakes and mishaps.
See the role you played in everything. This will show that we all play a part in both good and bad things. It allow you to steer your life instead of being steered by life.
Pay Bills
Knocking out bills feels great. It can deplete a small level of anxiety permanently. Each one you pay off or put on a payment plan, your ease your conscience.
You know you are making positive steps towards a stress free life regarding bills. And that feeling of progress feels good.
Mastering your finances is a great start to life mastery. If you focus on mastering this area, this mastery will bleed into other areas of our life naturally.
Making you more of the master of your life. Which when you are the master of your life, you can choose simplicity with ease. You can choose whatever life you want to live.
Do The Right Thing
Matthew McConaughey talks about easing our conscience in life in his speech about his 13 tips of life advice (A great video to watch that I put below this tip if you have some time). He talks about thinking a few steps ahead.
Doing the right thing and making choices that will not result in us having always look behind our back.
Hiding at the movies from someone we owe money to. Or, which he talked about, people sneaking around behind spouses backs then the wifes our husbands are both going to be at the PTA meeting. Not choices we want to live with if we want simplicity.
Do good by people. Rack up positives in peoples mind. Stephen Covey talks about this. Making positive deposits to people.
That people will see you as a person of integrity. And with integrity brings calmness to character.
As you know you are doing the right thing. And this resonates with our internal moral compass. When that compass is set in the right direction, we feel very positive about our existence. We like ourselves. And because of this, people like us.
Clean As You Go
Knock out those dishes right when you are done cooking. Even before eating the meal. Before they pile up and causes us to feel overwhelmed with having to clean the entire kitchen. Wipe the area clean after you cook. Put dishes away as soon as the dishwasher is done. Keep an upper hand on keeping your area clean.
Same with your room. Make the bed as soon as you wake up in the morning and scan it before you leave. Picking up things and straightening things up. As well as throwing dirty laundry in the hamper.
That way when you come home after a long day, your mind will be more at ease. It will come into a more peaceful environment. Allowing you to transition more effectively and faster into a more chill state. Instead of being bombarded by all the cleaning you have to do before you can sit down and relax.
Pick Your Clothing Before Hand
You can plan out your entire weeks wardrobe, allowing you to not even have to think about it when you wake up. This will cause you to save one decision for the day. Which can help you with decision fatigue. As the more decisions we make, the worse we become at making choices and decisions throughout the day.
Here is a great article that can help us all pick our wardrobe for the week in five minutes, check it out! How To Plan A Weeks Worth of Outfits in 5 Minutes
Witness Simplicity (Kids, Pets, Nature & Meditation)
Look at things like nature, dogs and kids. They live in the moment and live simple lives. They aren’t worried about the fluctuations of the stock market.
Or how their mutual funds are doing. The are in the moment. Purely present. Witness the acts of these things. And allow it to remind you to act similar.
Learn to meditate. Watch your breath for a few minutes out of each day to allow it to center you. Practice mindfulness mediation by using all your senses to take in your environment from time to time throughout out the day.
Mediation can help you live a more simple life as it helps you transcend worldly desires. You will be taking more and more of your joy internally.
The more you take joy from within, the more detached you become to the things that are making your life complex. You naturally rid yourself and your life of things that are causing you stress.
Say No More Often
When it comes down to it, saying NO is the way to simplify your life more than any other tip. Saying yes too much can make our lives into a disaster. Always trying to be here and be there. Be this person for that person, and that person for this person.
It all adds up into creating a life of complexity. You have the power to say NO.
If you have trouble with this, as do I, use this tip. Don’t blatantly say NO to people. Simply state this:
“As of right now, No I can’t do that. But if something changes I will let you know.”
This lets the other person off easy. And you are being honest. If something does change you can call them or text them and say yes.
Minimize Store Runs
If you are like me, I used to love just picking up a few things at a time at the grocery store. I don’t know what it is, but I only wanted to get a few things. In and out. I don’t know what it is about grocery stores, I just don’t like them! Anyways, it wasted wasting not only time, but money in gas.
I would go at awkward times at night or early in the morning when I realized I didn’t have enough of something. It made my life more hectic. Because I was being to lazy or didn’t want push through the discomfort of being in the grocery store.
Now I simply go there and buy everything and more I need for the week. Once a week. That is it. It has helped simplify my life.
You can also get a Costco card and do bulk shopping. Even get a bigger outdoor fridge and keep things in there. So you only have to go once a month to the grocery store.
Limit TV Watching
90 percent of the stuff on TV is negative. Too much killing, negative and fake news. And mindless drama of other people’s lives. It makes our brains go nuts. And us feel as if we are some how inadequate human beings.
Because we are watching peoples “perfect lives”. These scripted shows do nothing to help us simplify our lives.
If you are going to use the TV, use it as a way to decompress for a short amount of time. Don’t use it as an escape. As when you do so, you are more subjected to subliminal messaging to where the negativity can affect you at a deeper level.
Or record TV shows that you want to watch. Create a list of one thing you want to watch and watch just that. And then move on with the day.
Create Good Routines
When we have no plan for the day, we drift. We are exposed to all other options, which we can easily get sidetracked. And not get anything done. The best thing to do is to make a schedule where items take up the bulk of your day. Start with something like the gym or meditation in the morning.
Followed by cooking a healthy breakfast while listening to a podcast. Driving to work. Working. Driving Home. Stretching. Reflecting on your day. Doing some self care to help you decompress.
Bulk up your day with these routines that you can sink into each day. Positive things that become habit for you. So that you don’t get distracted by other things and waste your day.
Put Important Things In The Same Spot
There is nothing worse than losing your car keys or misplacing your cell phone. Especially when you need to be somewhere. Panic ensues! Have a hook for car keys that you make yourself place the keys on every time you go in the house.
Place the phone in your back pocket each time so that you know right where it is.
Put your wallet on the closest counter top when you walk in the door. Do this so that you always are aware of where your things are. This will cause less stress and offer a more simple existence!
Turn Off Notifications
We can often times waste minutes or even hours when we get notified about a text or social media alert. Turn social media alerts off. If it is social media, it isn’t life threatening. If it is, the person will call or text you. Make it a point to only check social media and email in the afternoon and evening. That is it. This will help simplify your life.
You can do so by using app blockers like Quality Time where you can block out times for work to where certain apps will not give you any notifications.
Downsize
We are a society programmed to think that bigger is better. Supersize drinks, big trucks, massive homes. This is taking up too much space. We can feel much more centered with less. Maybe it means renting or owning a smaller home.
Getting a smaller car or selling off cars that you don’t need. Eating smaller meals. Downsize your life a bit. It may not look as fancy to the world. But it will give you much more peace of mind.
Ask questions like: “Do I need this?” or “Do I have to have this or do I just WANT it.” This will help you not make rash decisions. Allow you to reflect first so you make decisions more consciously.
Our conscious decisions are ingrained into our subconscious minds after repeated thinking. Once you start consciously deciding to make choices that support your desired simplicity, you will start doing so more naturally.
As you will be using the power of your subconscious mind more readily.
Take One Day To Do Nothing
I read an awesome book by Navy Seal David Goggins, who is a self professed action-aholic. He is always moving, running, walking, working.
But he talks about how we need to recharge our batteries by taking one day to do absolutely nothing at all. A day where we don’t think about work. We maybe go to the movies with a buddy.
A day where we don’t go hard at the gym, or do much physical work at all. Get out in nature. Call a friend and catch up. Go fishing.
Something that will center you in the moment. Allow your mind to decompress. And get away from the chaos that life can throw at you.
Make A Garden
This can save you time in the grocery store and money. And the feeling of having a garden makes you feel as if you are transported to a time where there was no cars or electricity. Putting you in a more simple mindset and allowing you to relax more. Gardening is also very therapeutic.
Outsource Projects
Don’t try to be the master of everything. Or scared to delegate things because you feel as if you are the only one that can do it right or get it done.
I am this type of person so I know exactly how it can be to hand things off. But find people you can hire to do a good job for you. Get a cleaner to clean your home. Maybe it means working another hour or so per week.
But it takes the load off of having to clean the house. Hire someone to do the marketing you need done. Hire someone to come to your house to clean your car once a month. Utilize help so you can relax and focus on things that matter.
Live Within Your Means
No need to impress people. Why buy things we don’t really want or need to impress people we don’t really like? No need. Allow yourself to push through the feeling and need of wanting to keep up with the Jonse’s. Give yourself the freedom to buy what you need and no more of it.
Don’t Dwell Too Much On The Future
Trust that everything will turn out OK. Know that you are going to do your best. Learn all you need to learn. Wake up early. Stay up late. Have faith in your ability to survive and thrive now and in the future. Worrying about it doesn’t help you. It just wastes time and energy.
Laugh More
Laughing is the cure to complexity. It shows us that life isn’t all that serious. We just make it seem that way. Laugh like a maniac. Watch funny movies. Listen to your favorite comedian. Transcend the world through laughter.
Buy Local Produce and Meat
This allows you to feel good that you are supporting your community. And it is much more relaxing than fighting through grocery stores.
Tackle Problems Quickly
Don’t let things get out of hand. If you have a tiff with someone, call or text them and say you are sorry. Or that you want to move on from it. If you need to quit your job and pursue another one, don’t think about it for months. This will only cause more stress. Just do it. Quickly.
Workout At Home
If you aren’t super serious about the gym, you can get a full body machine or some weights and medicine balls and do a full body workout each day.
You can also tune into a nice yoga or pilates Youtube channel and get after it! No need to have a gym membership. You can do things like walk around the block a few times.
Go on hikes. Or running the track or bleachers at the local high school.
Drop The Perfection Image
We all want to look like we have out stuff together. It is totally natural. But in order for us to live more simple lives, we need to do away with this attitude.
Just be OK with not being perfect or striving for perfection. Being imperfect. Because no on is perfect. It will allow you to relax within yourself and not have to prove anything to anyone.
Have To Do Lists
Write the things down you need to get done. It is much more effective than trying to do so from memory. Empty your head of what you need to do. Put it on paper so you can use mental space for more important things.
Wear Headphones While You Are Out
Often times we want to get in and out of places. Especially when you are in a small town, you see people you know. They want to talk.
You can put on some nice white noise and listen to that while shopping or out and about. It can allow you to center yourself while being productive. And let people know you mean business!
Make Your Passion Your Paycheck
Doing what we are passionate about allows us to feel alive and energized. It simplifies our life because we are doing something that is natural to us.
Also when we need to learn things to become better, we do so because we WANT to. Not because we HAVE to.
Automate Bills Payments
Get those suckers so that the providers simply take the money out of your account each month. So you don’t have to even think about it.
Even plan it out so that you can gave all your bills be paid on the same day each month. This will allow you to know exactly how much is going out each month. So that you can budget and save and have know how much money you have to invest as well.
Don’t Hang With People Who Like Drama
Nothing is worse than people that gossip and start drama for dramas sake. These people don’t like their lives so they want to put down others or create mountains out of molehills.
Ditch these people. Your life will become much more simple and relaxing because of it.
Have A Password Manager
Get a nice free password manager like Last Pass that helps you create and remember passwords. So you aren’t stuck trying to create a new one and remember security questions!
Listen To Peaceful Music
Bob Marley, Bach, Beethoven, Andrea Bocelli. Music that makes you feel at peace. Feel happy. And lose the worries of the world.
This type of music has an ability to put you in a deep state of relaxation. Something we all need when seeking a more simple life.
Plan Getaways In Nature
Nothing will make us forget about the past and the future like being in nature. It puts in in the moment. Lets us transcend our reality. And lets us witness the harmony that ensues us at all times. The trees stretch as high as they can.
The birds chirping and singing sweet melodies. Animals gathering food. Wind rustling through plants and trees.
Go Chemical Free
The more we can go back to basics the better. You can even use vinegar and water to clean up things at the house. The less ingredients the better. Seek things that are basic. And are only filled with natural and chemical free ingredients.
Cook From Scratch More Often
Cooking from scratch can help us soak in the moment. Not worry about rushing through drive through’s to get food.
Or waiting long for restaurants where we don’t know what type of ingredients that are being used. It can help us truly reflect on the things we are putting into our body.
And be more creative with our food.
Nurture Current Relationships
We have all put a lot of time and energy into building our close relationships.
We should delve even deeper into them. I am not saying don’t make new friends, but time is short and you might as well spend it with people you adore the most.
Instead of trying to be popular and be liked by everyone. Spend your time and energy creating the best relationships with people you already have great relationships with.
Delete Unused Apps
The more our phones get cluttered, the more our mind does when we look at it. We can save time by deleting apps we aren’t using.
That way we aren’t wasting time trying to relocate the things we actually need. Less is more! Just keep the ones that benefit you and support your need of simplicity.
Delete Emails and Spam
Nothing is worse than letting emails pile up. Delete as you go. So that when you get to your inbox, you aren’t going through a ton of emails. Trying to locate ones that you really need to respond to. And those you don’t. We can miss important things if emails are piling up.
Unsubscribe From Email Lists
Also unsubscribe from current email lists from people you aren’t actually following. You can always resubscribe later if you find the need to reap value from this person again.
We all favor a few. Go through your email and look at the ones you click open the most. Those are the ones that you actively read. All the rest, just unsubscribe.
Set Up Google Alerts For Your News Needs
You can set up email alerts to alert you about the things you want to read about through Google Alerts. Set it up so that it sends you emails about only the topics, news and media you want to read.
That way you are getting it all from once source and nicely packaged for your consumption. Limit trying to do so by watching TV because you can spend too much time waiting to see and learn about the things you want to learn about that are going on in the world.
All you have to do is go to Google Alerts and type the topic in the “Create An Alert About” box to get daily alerts about the topics you want to stay informed about.
Only Follow People And Pages You Really Care About
Time is wasted fighting through your feeds trying to see things that really matter to you. If you are following people you knew from decades ago, but aren’t really playing a part in your current life, maybe it is time to give them the axe!
Only follow pages that are giving you value consistently.
Plan Your Days The Day Before
Do a brain dump at night for what you want to get done. Then schedule them throughout your day. This way you are getting stuff done each day. And following a schedule so you are utilizing the power of time management.
If you are looking for even more tips on how to manage your time, I wrote an article just for you! Here it is:
The Best Time Management Tips (Productivity Hacks)
Give Things Away If You Haven’t Used Them In The Last 6 Months
Chances are if you haven’t used it in this time frame, it isn’t really valuable to you. If you don’t want to toss it or give it away, open up a small storage unit for it.
Or store these things in a section of the garage to where, at least, it is out of your immediate environment. Decluttering will bring you more simplicity!
File Everything
Manila folders are super cheap to buy. Buy a stack of them and file all of your paperwork. And stay on top of this habit each and everyday. File away every single piece of paper, notes, personal and professional documents.
This will save you so much time and energy when trying to find things. As well as save you from having to print things out again. Or request documents to be sent to you.
Also, when you are opening mail, open it right away. Don’t let it sit around. Read it right when you get it or as soon as you can. So that it is done and out of the way.
Declutter Your Walls
Often times we have so many pictures, paintings and mirrors on our walls. Our attention is pulled to and fro. We can live a more simple life by having more bare walls. Or having at least a section of your home where you can hang out that has a minimum amount of things on the way. Where you can relax in and find peace.
Daily Reflection
Look back on your day and ask yourself what you did that was good regarding living a more simple life. And then ask yourself something along the lines of if you had this day to live over, what would you have done differently to bring you more simplicity?
Reflect On What You Have With Gratitude
Being happy with what we have makes us feel that we have enough. That we are enough. Gratitude is super powerful. It can give us a sense of ease that we have all that we need. That we don’t need anymore than what we have. Give it a try.
Have One Big Bag
Don’t try to hold your phone, your lunch, your jacket and your files all with your two hands. Simplify your life, ladies by getting a bigger purse. And gents by getting a gym bag or even backpack to put all your things in.
Don’t Buy Things Because They Are On Sale
Everyone loves to get a deal! But if we cave into buying things whenever we see that we can save some money, things end up piling up. Stuff we again, may not really need.
If you love it, buy it. Don’t just get things because they are less than the original price.
Don’t Text or Call Mindlessly
Always have intentions for conversations. Whenever you communicate, do so in a way that guides the conversation to your ultimate goal. Whatever that goal is. This way you aren’t wasting your time or others time by not being clear on what you want.
Delete Old Texts and Photos
Often times we let text threads pile up that we don’t really need anymore. Automated texts or texts from people we don’t really talk to anymore.
Delete these bad boys. Also declutter your camera roll of similar or duplicate photos. And of old videos you don’t want anymore. You can also load them to the cloud and delete them from your phone permanently. If you are still a little attached!
Get A Basic Cell Phone (Tracfone)
Yes people are most likely going to ask you if it’s a burner! And you will have to manually text letters. But it allows you to really take a break from having online access in your hands all day.
It eliminates texting long and unneeded texts. And the bill just has to be around 12 bucks a month! Talk about simplification on multiple levels! Is it really a dumb phone? Maybe, but you would be a smart user if you bought one!
Or you can get something called a Tracfone which you pay as you go for a Basic Plan that offers you just text and calling. It can still be done on a smart phone, you just won’t have online access.
Take Public Transportation More Often
Honestly if you are going around town and need to take a load off, public transportation isn’t bad. You don’t have to worry about driving. And you save money in gas.
Track Your Expenses
Reviewing your expenses each month can let you look over your own shoulder on what you have been spending your money on. You can identify spending patterns that are unnecessary. Or even things you are spending money on that are complicating your life. You can weed out the needed from the unneeded. What is really beneficial for your new life of simplicity.
Track Where You Are Spending Your Time
Track your days meticulously. See where you are wasting time at places or with people. And swap these time slots with things that support minimalism.
Make Your Coffee At Home
Not only do you save money, but you also will save a trip to the coffee shop. Pick up a nice Yeti and enjoy yourf cup of Joe on the way out the door. Now you don’t even have to wait to leave the house for the caffeine to kick in!
Hit The Library More Often
Need peace and quiet? Go to the library! I mean people can even get shushed for sneezing too loud there! Ahh peace and quiet. Go once a week and jump into a nice book and enjoy yourself.
Consolidate Your Email Accounts
You can set up your email accounts so all emails are redirected and forwarded to one. So all you have to do is log into one account. Of course, as our tip mentioned above, don’t check it too much throughout the day!
Ditch Negative Habits
There are so many things that sabotage our attempt at living a more simple life. A bad habit doesn’t just physically effect you. It can wreak havoc on your emotionally as well as have a big effect on the people around you.
If you need help finding a new habit to swap your bad habit with, here is a list to help you that I made just for you!
Clean Up Your Desk
Have only the necessities on that bad boy. Everything else gets put neatly into drawers. Do this at work and at home. You will get so much more done and feel way more relaxed while working at your desk.
Clean Out Your Wallet
Often times we have cards in our wallet that don’t really need to be there anymore. Or we use once in a blue moon. Just toss them into a small box in your desk or throw them away. That way you aren’t leafing through your wallet trying to find the cards you use the most.
Take A More Scenic Route To Work
Often times we are stressed like we are already at work, on the way to work! We can leave work for work by traveling a nicer route to work. Soaking it in and relaxing a bit. As well as a way to transition out of a crazy day by driving a nice route on the way home.
Focus On Debt Elimination
I don’t have to tell anyone how stressful it is getting calls from people that you owe money! It is the worst. Today say enough is enough. Create a get out of debt plan. And then once you do, hire a financial advisor to help you do better this time around with your money.
Use Up Half Used Things Around The House
When it comes to it, we all have things in the pantry and cupboard and drawers. You know the empty lotion bottles? Or the half used shampoo. Or the multiple spices that we have shoved to the back of the cupboard. Use those babies up!
