Self Discipline (The Ultimate Guide)
“Suffer the pain of discipline, or suffer the pain of regret.” – Unknown
When it comes down to making any change in life in any area of your life, you need to have motivation to do so. And then when that motivation wears, self discipline takes its place. But motivation is not enough. You can want to change but never change at all. That is how this life has worked for a lot of us at different times.
We know we need to make a change but we simply never do. Or are half assed in taking action towards solidifying that change.
But before we get into tips on how to be disciplined, I want to encourage see it as a must to become more disciplined. Do or die. Sink or swim. As when humans are faced with a situation where they are going to die or succeed. They almost always do what is necessary to survive. And then become better because of it.
See your life as that. That you are going to die if you don’t become more disciplined. Because you will. You will never feel alive. The feeling that comes from feeling good about oneself because you know you got things done. Getting things done allows you to also enjoy leisure time. Work hard, play hard.
Nothing is more satisfying that having a nice glass of wine or going to a big party after you crushed your goals for that week, month and year.
Until you make this choice, that your life is a reflection of how disciplined you are. That you are essentially dying if you are not progressing. Then you won’t make the change. Life is serious business. Treat it that way. If you are casual about it, you will become a casualty.
So now what we have agreed that we see it as life and death to being disciplined, now I want to share with you tips on how to become more disciplined. So that you can create the life of your dreams. And feel a sense of love and self respect about yourself because you are disciplined.
Enjoy my friends.
Definition of Self Discipline
It can help to examine and pick apart the word or our topic. So lets refer to our friends at Webster for the definition of self discipline:
The ability to make yourself do things that should be done.
Correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement
So looking at these two definitions, it is easy to get an idea of what self discipline is. It is doing things that we don’t want to do, but we know SHOULD be done. The ability to do so. Which we all have this ability.
The correction of our actions for the purpose of improvement. Improving ourselves, our lives, our families, or financial future and our future at large.
Regulating our actions to being more cohesive to what we know should be done. And ultimately the things that need to be done in order to get us out of ruts we are in. Or simply to create a better life for ourselves. And who doesn’t want life to get better, right?

How To Become More Self Disciplined (21 Simple Tips)
Before we get into the tips on how to be disciplined, I want to give you this quick word of encouragement:
Just because you started something and you quit, your not a quitter. Even if you have done this countless times, you ARE NOT YOUR PAST. Let us not define ourselves by the image people have of us of how we used to be. We have the ability to transform ourselves. Change is possible. Defy what people think about you. Let that be your fuel. To prove people wrong and yourself wrong.
Ok, here are some self discipline tips!
See It As A Friend Not A Foe
When it comes down to it, people see discipline as being a bad things. This is because of the fact that it has been likened to something bad. When we are disciplined in life, it usually meant that we had to go to detention. Or pick up trash. It was a CONSEQUENCE that we didn’t enjoy and did not look forward to.
But with self discipline it is entirely different. We don’t necessarily like doing thing things it takes to be disciplined, but we reap AWESOME rewards from being disciplined. Rewards much greater than if we weren’t.
I want you to start seeing discipline as your best damn friend in the world. That your life becomes easier because of being more disciplined.
Look at it this way. If you are more productive at work instead of being distracted and not being efficient with your time, you have the potential to get more done. Getting more done shows that you are more valuable asset to the company. Leading to promotion.
Leading to making more money. Leading to having more money to do better and more fun things with. Or invest and buy an asset like a rental property to bring you passive income. Letting you retire sooner.
See it as your best friend. That is is there to help you lead a better and happier life.
Also, the more disciplined you are, the more self respect you have. The more you will not tolerate things in your life that don’t support your happiness. A win win for you!
Wake Up At The Exact Same Time Daily
This boils down to getting enough sleep to be productive but not more than that. And getting up at the exact same time every day no matter what happens. If you do this daily, you will have started your day off with disciplined. And you will show yourself that you can keep your word with yourself.
Waking up at the same time also sets our internal time clocks so that we are ready to go when it comes that time. Our body can never functionally optimally if we never give it exact times to be ready. If one day we wake up at 5 and crush it at the gym. Then the next day we sleep in until twelve, our bodies get confused.
In order to be fully prepared for the day, we need familiarity. Which is one of our basic human needs. And waking up at the same time each day can give us that familiarity.
FitnessNetwork also talks about the fact that waking up at the same time everyday stabilizes your circadian rhythm. The result of doing so will allow you to naturally become more tired at the same point each night. Which will help you go to bed at a good hour. And allow you to wake up at a good hour as well.
Even if you stay up to late one night, your body will try to force you back to your normal sleep pattern. Hence the more you do so, the more your body will help you go to bed at a reasonable hour.
Do Something Productive Right Upon Awakening
You want to rack up a few quick wins. Make your bed upon rising right away. That is a win. Drink a nice glass of water to re-hyrdate. That is a win. Text a loved one good morning and you love them. That is a win. Rack up a few wins and that will set the pace for the rest of your day. To rack up even bigger wins.
Also, read or listen to something positive when you wake up. This will prime your mind to be positive for the rest of the day. Turn the news off and turn up the personal development audio.
Use The Potential Of Regret To Your Benefit
When it comes down to it, do you want to get to the end of your life with a bunch of regrets? For all your dreams, goals and visions to die with you? Looking at you with angry eyes, telling you that only you can have given them life but now they must go to the grave with you?
No, of course not. See your life this way. Take actions that are going to lead you far away from regret. Ask yourself this question throughout the day “Is the decision bringing me closer to less regret or closer to having more regret?”. Things in your life will come up to where you will want to take the easy road out.
Someone will ask you to go out for a pizza and a drink. But you know you should stay back and get to bed early so you can rise and grind the next day. Or spend some extra hours on your home based business.
Let this question help you make the tough choices.
All this question is doing is allowing you to become aware of the consequences of what could happen if you swallow the blue pill or red pill. One will give your life and fulfillment. The other will bring you closer to death and a life of regret.
Develop The Habit of Doing More Than You Are Asked
The quickest way to mediocrity is doing only what is required. Just enough to skate by. This is a perfect way of solidifying your spot on the list of people who no one will ever remember.
In order to be disciplined, we need to go above and beyond. Even if it is just a little more at first. At your job or in the home. Do more than what is required. This will create a feeling that you are standing out from the crowd. It will give you a sense of superiority. Not in a sense that you are better than others. But that you are becoming a better version of yourself.
And the feeling of progress is a good feeling. You will feel better about yourself. And this will lead to you being happier. And wanting to continue to do more than you asked for.
The more you do this, the more you will see that you naturally are more disciplined and get more done. As you are creating a lifestyle change. Which will show up in all areas of your life.
You can’t become more disciplined by doing the same thing you are doing now. Raise the bar on yourself and watch yourself naturally raise with it.
Do Things Even When You Don’t Feel Like It
We all feel like crap. More days than not, we feel worse than we do good. But you cannot wait until you feel good to go do something.
You need to get up and take action regardless. Do things until you feel like doing it. Instead of waiting to feel like it.
You think the fittest people guy earth only show up to the gym when they feel like going? Or that the CEO became the CEO by only showing up to work when she felt like it? Nope, not even close.
Learn How To Focus
You can’t be disciplined with distractions. Whenever you are going into something that you want to get more done with, identify potential distractions. And then make it so those distractions won’t be around when you are trying to get things done. Of course the phone is a good example of that. Turn it off. Log out of your accounts so they are not on auto sign in, so that when you try to log in to them, you will be reminded to not do so.
If noise is a distraction of getting your reading done, hunker down in a park and go to town. Find out what distracts you from being more productive and eliminate it.
Do Things Until The Job Is Done
Don’t stop when you are tired or want to quit. Stop when the job is done. Don’t give yourself an out. Push past the feeling that you have done enough. Is it enough? You know the answer to that. Don’t setting for mediocre performance. Create a drive to where you get the job done completely. This will tell your mind and body to give you no excuses when you want to quit. That you are going to persevere and push through regardless until things are finished.
Resist the temptations. You will get more done and be more disciplined.
If you need some motivation on how to persevere, I wrote an article about it with 175 perseverance quotes just for you! Check it out: 175 Perseverance Quotes
Stretch Your Limitations
Stretch yourself beyond what you think you are capable of. If you think you can only write 1000 words in a row, bang out 1200. You will see that once you do so a couple times, you will be able to do it easily and naturally.
Once you stretch your limitations, you can never go back to the original limitation. This will make you naturally more disciplined as you are now a entirely new person. You laugh at your previously implicated productivity levels. Because now you are so much bigger and better than them.
Fear Mediocrity Intensely
I am going over this one more time because it needs to be reiterated. Fear the potential of being mediocre. Be scared of being it, labeled it or dying as it. Be the hardest worker in the room.
Master Your Thoughts
You need to learn how to control what you think. Just because your mind is thinking one thing doesn’t mean that you need to listen to it. You need to go to get up when it tells you to sit down. You need to stay awake when it tells you to take a nap. Stop listening to what you tell yourself. Unless it is supportive of you being productive and disciplined.
Schedule Your Day And Check EVERYTHING Off
If you need to workout 3 times this week, schedule it. If you need to do yoga once a week, put it in the schedule. If you need to spend more time with people in your life, write that SOB down.
Take a week and schedule everything you need to get done that week. Allocate those time slots and get after it.
This will keep the fire burning. No one likes to look at their to do list and now have checks next to it. Schedule it and then do it. No other advice on this one, just the Nike Slogan. Just Do It. The only cure to not doing something is doing it.
Separate Productivity From Time
Pack as much as you can into your time. Don’t go work out and spend two hours there half assing a workout. No, do it in 45 minutes. Go hard. Discipline yourself to keep going and be efficient. This will help you become more efficient and less time wasting in every area of your life.
Just because you were at the gym for 2 hours doesn’t mean that you worked out for two hours. Pack productivity into your hours. See that time is running out. That how we spend our time is up to us. And we can never get it back.
Be Real And Tough On Yourself
I read a book called Can’t Hurt Me by Navy Seal David Goggins. He transformed his life through self discipline and pushing himself constantly out of his comfort zone. He talks about the power of change and that it is directly related to being real with ourselves.
Be honest with yourself. Tell yourself that you are not disciplined in the areas you are not disciplined in. And then ask yourself why you are not?
And don’t sugarcoat this process. Tell yourself the cold, hard truth. That you are being damn lazy in X and Y areas and that you need to change. And then change. Don’t say, “Oh it’s OK you are doing alright.” Don’t let yourself off easy.
Look yourself in the mirror if you have to and directly tell yourself that you are being a lazy piece of s***.
Realize The Pain Of Discipline Doesn’t Last
Becoming more disciplined to do the things you want and need to do can feel overwhelming. That you will be in pain forever trying to change.
But a habit is formed by doing the same thing over and over consistently. Good and bad. The more discipline you integrate into areas of your life, the easier it becomes to just do so naturally. It is like waking up and brushing your teeth. You don’t want to do it. But it is a habit that you have ingrained so that you just get up and do it without thinking about it much.
The same thing happens when you consistently take action on what you need to get more done. It becomes something to where you dread doing less and less. That you push through much easier.
Realize this fact when you are thinking about discipline. That it will suck at first but will get so much easier and usually sooner than you think.
Then you start to embrace discipline and look for it in your life.
Set Goals That Set You On Fire
With captivating enough goals we will actually welcome a level of discipline bigger and larger than we ever have.
We have all had some goal to look forward to in which we couldn’t wait to get out of bed to get after it. We need to always have at least one goal like this. One that makes us look forward to waking up instead of looking forward to going to bed.
I am not saying this is a cure all. But it will help you put off what you want to do NOW, aka the easy way out, for what you want for your FUTURE. Aka the things you need to get done to create a life of your dreams.
I created on a guide for you on how to set and accomplish any goal if you want to check it out here! How To Set And Accomplish Goals
Realize It All Adds Up
Self discipline can be horrible at first. As wee feel that we aren’t making any progress. And when we don’t see progress, we naturally get discouraged. But the thing about discipline is that all the little things that looking meaningless, unsexy and not very cool add up. It is like a leaky roof dropping water into a bucket. These little beads of water look as if they are nothing in that bucket when we first place it under the leak. But then we wake up in the morning and see how full it became over night.
It is like the compound effect. The more you put in, the more you will get out. But you won’t see it at first. But when you do see your returns on your effort, you will be shocked at how much it all added up.
That is why we need to track our progress. Look back at pictures of yourself before you started working out to see how much better your body is shaped. Record yourself on cold calls and listen to them a couple months later and compare it to a recent recording to see how much you have honed your skills.
Tracking and monitoring progress will give you the motivation to keep going and believing that your discipline will pay off.
Nourish Your Body Properly
You cannot function optimally if your mind and body are weak. Hit the gym. Get a the at least the minimum amount of physical exercise per week, 150 minutes. Eat more healthy foods. Ditch fast food and eat at home more. No it won’t be easy. But easy come, easy go!
Discipline yourself so that you stand out from the crowd. Embrace being different. Make the hard choices now so your life can become easier. Instead of the opposite.
A healthier mind and body will naturally default to making decisions that support your goals and dreams. When we are unhealthy, it is easier to lay around and be in a pity party.
Clears minds, healthy bodies, can’t lose!
Get Some Accountability
We all need to roll with someone who has our back. Who want us to achieve. Accountability can help you reach and surpass your goals faster and easier than you could alone.
We all need a coach in some sense. To keep us on our game. Regular check ins with a friend can help us keep the fire burning. And to help us stay on track. Especially when our battery is running low.
Get a friend in which you know will be consistent in checking in with you. Both of you find goals that mean a lot to you. And support each other weekly or bi-weekly with check in calls or meetings. Even with simple encouraging texts.
See The Future
Planning and seeing ahead is crucial to self discipline. For example if you think know that your friend is not on the same path as you are to living a healthy life, eat before you guys go out. So that you won’t be tempted to cave in a and eat the bad food they order. Or at least you will eat less of it because you will already have food in your stomach.
If you know you binge eat when you get off of work, then eat a nice healthy bar on your way home to curb and manager the hunger.
Keep Developing Yourself
In order to feel worthy of persevering and greatness and discipline, we need to be constantly developing our minds. Always seek growing opportunities. The more we grow, the more we can feel worthy of good things. Which will allow us to take action that supports the acts of discipline. Because we won’t want to sabotage ourselves. We like ourselves enough to implore discipline in our lives.

The Power Of Self Discipline
So at the end of the day, the more you act, the better your self esteem becomes. The more you master your mind by pushing through resistance, the more capable you feel and become. You start believing in your abilities.
You gain self respect from self control. You start to conquer yourself and your desire to stay mediocre. You start to shine in a way that separates you from who you used to be. You embrace your power and your ability to master yourself. And through self mastery, we become happier, healthier and wiser.
As your self esteem boosts, you make even better decisions. And faster positive decisions with less resistance. What used to be hard and feel like sacrifice becomes easy and almost seen as a better alternative.
Your intrinsic worth rises, letting you make decisions that keep supporting positive things. That is why they say nothing succeeds like success. The more successful you become, the more success is drawn into your life. Much more naturally and easy.
You will also be able to play after you work with a clean conscience. Knowing that you put in the work. Did the hard things. This will make your play that much more gratifying. Allowing you a better outlet to blow off steam. Letting you come back with more vigor and energy when it comes time to hit the pavement again.
Conclusion to How to Be Self Disciplined
You have the ability to triumph over the struggle of what it takes to be self disciplined. It is a muscle that more you develop, the more you will get the satisfaction and peace of mind that comes with it.
It shows you that you can overcome obstacles. And bring about a sense of leadership and ownership of your life. Then it is game over. You will win out over anyone who lacks self discipline. Allowing you to win in every area of your life.
The more you push through and be self disciplined, the more you will train your mind to relax in situations that are stressful and required you to be disciplined in. That will harness the power of your mind to work for you and no longer against you. It will push you from behind to achievement and productivity. Instead of trying to pull you back into mediocrity.
So, as Joe Rogan talks about, be the hero of your own story. The superhero that saves the day. That turns your life around starting today. Saying enough is enough. Make moves each day as if your life is a documentary and how much of a force and a bad ass you became. As if the next generations are watching it and saying to each other how bad ass my dad or mom, brother or sister, unlce or aunt is and became.
