Self Help For Beginners
All in all, I consider this a self help blog. I mean there is a reason I put it as “personaldevelopfit” instead of “fitpersonaldevelopment”. One reason was that the first one sounds like a play on words for. But it also puts the priority to this blog.
That even though, in my heart of hearts, I believe fitness is a crucial component to the development of YOU. I know it is only a component. That it can definitely help. But it is only part of the journey.
Personal development is what sounds like. Developing yourself personally. Doing so in a way that is personal to YOU.
So when creating this list, I thought about ways that I can bring to you. In which it can be more universal when it comes to personal growth. That anyone on their journey could use it. Tips that you can use to accelerate your self help journey.
Tip #1: Help Yourself
The phrase self help is more of an umbrella for material that was created to help it’s audience. To do better. To become better. To live better.
But at it’s essence, the two words really mean “help yourself”. That is the point of education. It is not that you are an empty cup and that you are being filled with knowledge. You are DRAWING out of you what already is there. That is that specific point of education.
So when it comes down to it, self help is reading, listening and watching things that help YOU.
Are you with me still?
Things that may or may not help others. But help you and you only. Because I believe, that the ultimate destination you will arrive to is a place to where you can help others. Because for some reason, when you start to engage in self help, you really start to feel a need to give back in some way.
Which Tony Robbins talks about how “Giving” is a spiritual need. That when we fulfill it, we feel wonderful. It is a need that many of us don’t really think about until we start to expand our vision of ourselves and of our lives.
That is why engaging in a life of self help is so crucial. It lets you grow how you see yourself. Which makes you happier, more loving, more courageous, more peaceful and more successful.
And this person you BECOME is a person that wants to help pull people up to their level. The ultimate win-win scenario.
So back to the point. What do you think you need? Do you need to become more motivated? Well then maybe you need to learn how to set goals that motivate you? Which you can do so here:
How To Set & Accomplish ANY Goal
Or maybe you just need to start with quotes that will motivate you. As for some reason, other peoples perspectives on life can be life altering. As they have cut the learning curve in a way. Gone where we want to go. Don’t what we want to do. And are the people that we aspire to be like. If this is you, check out this article I wrote for YOU.
Or possibly you need help with time management. You know you could be getting so much more done. But the time seems to escape you. You get to the end of the day and ask yourself “Where did the day go.” Too many days like this are leaving you frustrated? Can you relate??
IF this is you, check out this article I wrote for you here:
The Best 30 Time Management Tips (Productivity Hacks)
No matter what it is, the areas of life you need to help yourself in are personal to you. So the main thing is to make a clear evaluation of your life. And see where you need help in. And then start there!
This is where your journey may start! And trust me, it is the most incredibly fulfilling journey. Because you realize that there is so much possibility in this life. That there is no length to how far you can take to grow yourself. You can always, be, do and become more.
Tip #2 No Extra Time (NET)
This self help tip is great for those who have busy lives. AKA us all! But no extra time comes down to doing things for your own growth and personal development during times when you have free time. So when you are out and about, doing chores, running errands or driving to and from locations, you feed your mind.
This could be listening to Zig Ziglars motivational tapes. Or it could be listening to a communication audio to help you become better at work and in life.
You are essentially doubling up on being productive.
When I started doing this, I was soaking up mass quantities of information. I wasn’t waiting until or got somewhere, to listen or read.
It was a great feeling because I felt like I was maximizing my time very effectively. I was educating myself more readily than ever. And doing so during times where I was getting things done that I needed to get done regardless of what happened during that day.
Motivational author and speaker Brian Tracy refers to this as the “University on Wheels”. Where we can literally get degrees worth of learning done while we are out and about.
Have a good book on you always. When you are in line somewhere, waiting for the doctor even sitting through commercials while watching TV. Crack that sucker out and go through some content. You will be amazed how fast you fly through books that may have taken you weeks or even months to read at home.
Get an audible account. And have your headphones on you always. Do your grocery shopping while listening to a great audio book. Listen while you are walking your dog. And of course while you are at the gym.
Tip#3 Ask TWO Questions Each Day
What would I do the same tomorrow?
What would I do different tomorrow from today?
These two questions can be life changing. Literally. It allows you to focus on the positive aspects of your day. Say you worked out in the morning and got it out of the way. You realize that this is a great way to start your day and gives you energy for the rest of the day. This is something you would do the in the same fashion the next day.
But then say you knew you were going to be late getting off work. And you didn’t text your spouse to let them know you were going to be late. And they were worried about you and ended up feeling mad and neglected.
You learn from that and know that your “tomorrows” will be filled with you reaching out and sharing with your spouse that you will be late.
It is a great way to build upon the positive. And correct the negative.
Self Help Tip #4 – Analyze Your Life (Limiting Beliefs)
We all make mistakes at some point in life. We are only human. But we can make sure these mistakes were for good use by really analyzing them. This has a lot to do with getting rid of our limiting beliefs. Working on “knowing thyself”.
I’ll give a personal example.
I was in a great relationship. With an amazing person. But the relationship mimiced my parent relationship in some ways. Which they got divorced when I was young.
So I started to do things to sabotage the relationship.
But I also harnessed a limiting belief that said that “All marriages never work”. Or something of the sorts. Because I knew my mom and dad had both been divorced twice. And that most of my friends had parents that had broken up too.
I was scared of this. I didn’t want my kids to go through a divorce. So, in my mind, I thought it better to not get too close to this person. Because of if I did, I would somehow get badly hurt.
But at the end of the day, I wanted to get married. And one day I analyzed this limiting belief. And saw that it was put there by my brother. He said something of the sorts when I was really young. And I held onto that.
And it was not serving me any longer. Because I was keeping myself from the ultimate union with someone. I was avoiding pain, but creating a lot more because of it.

Self Help Tip #5 – Never Compare Your Journey
When I first started with my self help journey, I would find myself comparing myself to people. Thinking I was too old to go back to school. Or too old to go into a certain career. That it was too late.
But these thoughts are again, limiting beliefs.
Some people may feel to young to go into things. But these little fears are keeping us from being and becoming our best. If we can put them aside, our self help journey will become way more fulfilling. And full of possibilities.
If your mind ever tries to bring you to a place of comparison, just move ahead anyways.
I mean just because one person has done something before us doing so, doesn’t mean that we can still be great at it!
It isn’t about where and when you begin, it is how end. It is all about what you do with the time you have left. Maximizing that time. And getting yourself closer and closer to your full potential everyday.
And when you do this, you gain massive momentum. You become a freight train which can’t be stopped. Because as Newton says, an object in motion tends to stay in motion.
The more you move forward in spite of what your mind is telling you to do, the more momentum and belief in yourself that you get.
You become someone that maybe even you thought you could never be.
And one day you look back at how far you come. And you almost won’t even recognize yourself. People will see you in an entirely different way. It will feel almost overwhelming because you are literally a new person.
Self Help Tip #6 – Do Things That Make Your Happy
This tip reminds me of the great quote:
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” – Howard Thurman
This really is, in my opinion, the a very accurate definition of self help. It’s core essence.
Again, because I think the goal of self help is to help yourself so that you can help others. The greatest among us ultimately become the servant to us.
And this can start by really doing the things in life that make you feel totally alive. Things that make you feel energized during and after doing them. Things that make you literally feel like you can fly.
Because YOUR world needs that. And THE world needs that.
Your world needs it because we all need to be living lives that feel as if they have purpose to them
We are purpose driven organisms. And if we are not growing, we are dying.
So when we do things that make us feel alive, we feel as if we are spending our limiting time on this earth well.
And the world needs us to do so to because they need hope that we can live life in a non-traditional way.
Because we all know, deep down, that we are all meant for greatness. That mediocre is not something we were created for.
I know you know this. As I know this.
And once we do things that light us on fire, we give others permission to do the same.
We can influence people in a way that is drastically more effective. And we can do something that makes us feel as if our life was worth it. Leave a legacy. Something that lives on long after we kick the bucket.

Self Help Tip #7 – Forgive Yourself
Again, at the end of the day, you are only human. And if we are carrying around these things in our lives that we feel terrible about, we can never really become the best version of ourselves.
These anchors are literally slowing down how our being vibrates. It effects our mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health.
You have to look at life this way. You were acting from a state of conscience that you at during that moment. With all the life experience and stimulus that you had picked up along the way.
Nobody is perfect. We all go through life wishing we could go back and change things. But, when it comes down to it, life would be incredibly boring if we did every single thing perfectly.
It would take away from our need for variety. The polarity of certainty.
Know that you are only human. And that YOUR PAST IS NOT YOU. It is a reflection of your conscience at the time. That part is worth saying twice.
Learn from it and move forward. Here are a couple quotes to help you with this:
“Never be defined by your past. It was just a lesson, not a life sentence.” – Unknown
“You are not the mistakes of your past, but the resources and capabilities that you gleaned from it.” – Jordan Belfort
Self Help Tip #8 – Don’t Be Stuck In Your Story
We all tell ourselves stories that keep us from doing the things we want to do in life. Getting the things we want from life. And become the person we want to become.
For example, someone who can’t lose weight. They say something like “I’ve tried everything to lose weight.”
When you say this, your mind starts seeking for ways to justify this. Because that is what the mind is meant to do.
But this story is keeping you from really finding the answers you need to lose weight. If you had tried everything, you would be fit.
What story are you telling yourself that is not true? That is keeping you from living the life of your dreams?
Once you recognize the story or stories that are getting in your way, write a new story. And start believing that one. One that supports you creating a beautiful and amazing existence for yourself.
Like Tony Robbins says:
“Divorce your story and marry the truth.”
And that truth that you are infinite and have limitless potential. And the only limit is the one you are putting on yourself. Break free from your old story. And start believing one that is worth telling yourself, over and over again.
Self Help Tip #9 – Ask A Lot Of Questions
Now this may seem a little counter intuitive to selp helping and improving yourself. But in actuality, it can help you grow maybe more than any other self help tip on our list.
When you ask questions, you learn so much more. You also develop something called EMPATHY. Which is one of the strongest emotions you can feel in this life.
Because empathy allows us to connect with people. And we feel this sense of interconnectiveness. That I feel that we all feel to an extent. That we are all connected in some strange way.
And when we offer an empathetic experience to someone, we feel this connected feeling. And it brings us into a state of slight enlightenment. A peace and that passes all understanding. A beautiful and growth provoking experience.
Also, when we listen to people, we hear things they say that reflect things in us. It helps us know ourselves better through their responses.
It can help us grow ourselves that much more. It can touch a nerve or make us reflect more. And from there on out, go about helping ourselves become better, let go of things or make changes in our life that brings us more success, knowledge, insight and happiness.
Self Help Tip #10 – Visualization
Visualization is a process of doing something inside your head before it happens in the real world. The man name Roger Bannister was famous for doing this when it came to breaking the one minute mile.
He kept trying and try to break the 4 minute barrier. But just kept coming up short. And of course, this was reinforced by people who kept saying that it wasn’t possible.
So he stared envisioning himself running a mile in under 4 minutes. He had to do it in his head first. To make his body feel and believe it could do so.
And of course he ended up being the first person to ever run a mile in under 4 minutes. Which shortly thereafter, dozens of people did it. Even high school kids have done so!
The difference maker was how we saw it. The world saw it as an impossible feat. Something that simply wasn’t humanly possible.
But once one human, Bannister did so, it would accepted in the minds of those who would shortly thereafter, accomplish the same feat.
The quote below is widely accepted in the pyschological community:
“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” – Napoleon Hill
We are creators of our own existence. The images we create in our heads, whether actually happening, or ones we visualize, are accepted as being real by our minds. Our mind simply doesn’t know the difference.
The key to visualization is to hold the image as long as you can in your head. So if you want to become salesperson of the year, you need to hold this vision as long as you can in your awareness.
And do so until you feel as if you have already done so. That if it happened in real life, it would actually seem kind of anti-climatic. Because you have seen and lived it so many times in your mind.
Here is a more in depth article on visualization, offering you the best tips to visualize anything you want in life. With natural ease.
Resource: How To Visualize (9 Pillars of Visualization)
When it comes to self help, visualization is about more than just getting what we want in this life. It also comes down to changing our self image.
Because we act in accordance to how we see ourselves. We make fake it for a bit and act outside of how we see ourselves. TEMPORARILY. But we will always go back to acting congruent with the image we have of ourselves.
But through visualization, we can drastically alter our self image. To a more confident, happy, successful and peaceful person. However you want to be, you can visualize it.
And the more you do so, the more you will start acting in accordance to this new self image you are creating. You will literally transform yourself and every area of your life by doing this.
Self Help Tip #11 – Heavily Identify Yourself With Self Help
Going back to a point I made earlier in the article, we act in accordance to how we see ourselves. We behave in perfect accordance to our self image.
If we believe we are big boned and that we will never lose weight, our minds will find answers for believing this. And we physically act in sync with these limiting thoughts.
If you feel as if you are a workaholic, you will act each day like a workaholic.
The fact of the matter is that we repeatedly talk to ourselves. We tell ourselves what we are over and over all day. We literally keep reinforcing these things. Over and over. More and more with each thought pattern.
This can be very good or very bad.
But when it comes to our self help journey, we can literally use it to our benefit.
To really take off with self help, you want to start eating, breathing, talking, sleeping, thinking and being about self help.
When you go throughout your day, talk to people about how you are working on yourself. Tell people about the books you are reading. The positive quotes that are inspiring you. How you are transforming your life.
The more you affirm these kind of things, the more you start believing in it yourself. You see yourself as a vessel of self growth. And so does the world. And because of these two facts, self help becomes a major force in your life with ease. Because it is WHO you are now.
Also, teach it as much as you can. When you start really moving forward with your self help journey, you are going to attract people to who want your energy. Because you are going to be vibrating at a whole new level.
So when these people come into your life, give your knowledge to them. Again it will reinforce your self help journey and persona. As well as teach you even more about the knowledge and experience you have accumulated. Because the teacher usually learns just as much if not more about the subject they are talking about.
