What Does Procrastination Mean?
Contents
First let’s talk about what does procrastination mean? Well first off, the meaning and definition of procrastination is:
The action of delaying or postponing something
To put off intentionally and habitually
So looking at the actual Webster definition of procrastination, we get a feel for what it is. It is putting essentially a habit of putting things off. But the positive aspect of the definition is that it is a habit. We aren’t born with habits, we create them. Knowing this fact, we can now know that we can create a new and more supportive habit when it comes to not procrastinating.
The 3 Types of Procrastinators (Which One Are You?)
But when it comes to procrastination, we also need to talk about the different types of procrastinators. According to Joseph Ferrari who is a Ph.D, author of the book “Still Procrastinating? The No Regrets Guide To Getting It Done“. and associate professor of Psychology at De Paul University in Chicago, there are 3 different types of procrastinators, all of which have different motives. The 3 types of procrastinators include:
The Thrill Seeker – This is the person who feels as though they can put thigns off because they like working against a deadline. They get the thrill of knowing they have to knock things out or else! If you are this type of procrastinator, then you want to constantly set as well as adjust deadlines for yourself. What this will do is still provide the rush or adrenaline that comes from being up against a deadline, but you will use your time more effectively instead of procrastinating. This personality type has been linked to having the toughest time breaking the habit of procrastination, although it still can be done!
The Avoider – This is the type of person who feels like they need to procrastinate in order to avoid being judged by their success or failures that come from getting things done. If you are this type of person, a tip for you is to know that success is a great thing and something that you shouldn’t be ashamed of. The other side of the coin is knowing that failure is simply something to teach us how to improve, not a life sentence. Focus on doing the best possible job you can on your tasks and worry less if at all about what others think.
Indecisive – This type of person is a perfectionist or at least often the case. They procrastinate in order to shift responsibility away from themselves. If you are this type of person, keep in mind that everything doesn’t have to be perfect in order for you to move forward. Take small risks while utilizing your intuition. Mistakes will simply be there to help you learn something new. Create small tasks out of the big one, into parts that you feel that are more manageable for you.
The same author talks about how the habit of procrastination is created from being raised with authoritive parents. Yes you can call your mom and dad and blame them for the countless hours you have lost from procrastinating! Just kidding. But this is because either the child is acting out in a form of rebellion the the child loses the ability to that it takes to take proper care of themselves.
Next we will get into why you and I procrastinate and how to build habits that will help you eliminate the habit of procrastination!
How To Not PRocrastinate
1.) Plan Your Day
When it comes down to it, the best way to stop procrastinating is to simply become aware of when you are doing so. We need to monitor our days relentlessly. When we start tracking our days, we start to build a sense of almost guilt when it comes to wasting time. It puts a fire under our ass to start moving and using our time wisely.
Often times we will procrastinate for an hour or more and then wake up from this productivity nap, as I like to call procrastination, then we realize how much time we have wasted.
Once we start to plan out our day, you will notice that you the one thing you don’t plan is a time slot for procrastination. When we are on a schedule, we aren’t as likely to fall victim to procrastination. We know what we have to get done and just knowing what we have to get done is a great start.
This is because it is externalizing it onto paper. It gets us out of our own head and doesn’t leave it to chance. I mean how many times have you had to get things done and you think you are going to do so off of purely memory. Then you get to the end of the day and you still have things to do that you now have to move over to the next days to-do list? I have done this more days than I can count!
Jordan Peterson talks about how productive productive people are. He talks about how we are operating at around 51% of our potential each day. Often times we waste so much time on things like watching YouTube videos or going on social media. These distractions our sabotaging us from reaching our full potential, or at very least, keeping us from living a happier, richer life. Both financial and in a general sense of the term.
We need to engage in acts that allow us to sacrifice the things in our life that are important to us, but deep down we know are holding us back.
Let us start by writing down time slots for all we get done. Of course you aren’t going to hit them dead on, but the more you get in the practice of doing this, the more you will move throughout your day in a more efficient way. By creating deadlines in a list, we are now held accountable which is a powerful tool to accomplish goals with.
We need to realize that we are dying literally one minute at a time. So if we love life or at least want to reach our full potential, we need to harness the power of time management.
This will also help you not feel as overwhelmed as being vague as to what you have to do throughout the day, and thinking we know everything we have to do. As we do so when we try and freestyle it without writing things down. Creating a step one, then a step two and a step 3 will give you a hiarchy of the goals you want to knock out throughout the day.
Feel the confusion and do it anyways. You will still feel overwhelmed and feel the feeling of wondering what you should do next, but simply revert back to your written down schedule and move forward.
You can also break down the big things on your list into even smaller goals within the big goal in order to feel less overwhelmed about it and make it look smaller and more manageable.
Now these to goals need to have a justified existence. Do they deserve to be given life? Does it make sense to us to actually take action on these goals? If it does, then keep it on your schedule, if not then it is going to take you a lot more time to do so because you will have resistance against it the entire time. This won’t allow you to operate at your full potential on these tasks.
Essentially, we need to ask ourselves if the things on our daily schedules are worthwhile, if they are not then they shouldn’t be on our schedule.
2.) Just Take The First Step
There are either two approaches we can take, to jump head first off the diving board or to put a toe in, then a leg, then go waist deep and then totally submerge.
How about simply starting slow with a task and just putting 10 minutes into it. Often times this is enough to get us going and mentally OK with doing more long-term. Looking at things you have to do with a perspective of only doing so for a short amount of time will allow us to not get intimidated by how long it is really going to take.
Just get yourself moving and momentum will start to take over.
Break things into these small tasks and then take short breaks in between if you need so in order to regroup.
3.) Realize Your Not A Product Of Your Past
If you find yourself avoiding doing certain things on our list, you and I need to do one of two things. Either procrastinate more effectively by shifting gears to accomplishing something else on our list.
Or we need to ask ourselves why we are procrastinating on certain things? And be prepared to get the answer, as this is what asking questions is truly about. Don’t ust mutter the words, truly be honest with yourself about why you are procrastinating.
Maybe you are procrastinating on your school work simply because you aren’t passionate about what you are studying or you are going to school for the wrong reasons like your parents told you to do so. Or you may not be pursuing a big goal because you think people around you will resent you and your success if you go after and accomplish the goal.
The answers may make you feel terrible, but it is better than living in denial for the rest of our lives. Once you identify the real source of procrastination, you can then move forward with creating a game plan for ridding yourself of the source of procrastination. But until you ask the tough questions, you will never get the answers that are worth their weight in gold.
Also, don’t be defined by your past. Often times, we start things and we quit. This doesn’t mean we are quitters or that it is who we are. It is simply the past. Joe Rogan talks about how we can wake up today and be the hero of our own story. That the past really doesn’t matter, literally at all.
When we realize that we are not our past, simply retaining experiences from it we can either learn from it or let go of thinking we are our pasts and move forward in a new and more positive and enlightening path and journey.
The person who is willing to look at themselves in the most rational light, will get the most vital answers needed to move forward and make the best life out of this short amount of time on this earth.
So today, I want you to deeply internalize that feeling that you are not your past. Your life is dictated by the choices you make from this day forward and you can be a winner and win in this life by starting with a blank slate today by resonating with this fact.
Some people say that fear is false evidence appearing real. Which I agree so to an extent, but the evidence is real, we simply just blow it out of proportion. When we really look at the consequences of doing what we fear, we see that the evidence is real of why we fear it, but not as bad as our feelings about it led us to believe it to be.
“Never be a prisoner of your past, it was just a lesson, not a life sentence.”
Joe Rogan also talks about how we need to regulate the amount of time we dwell on regrets of the past. (If you can’t tell, I love Joe Rogan!) Don’t beat yourself up,about procrastinating, simply recognize that you are doing so and then move forward with more intensity than ever. Never look back, only forward. 5 i
4.) Fear Is The Reason
When we fear our lives going a certain direction, we simply either let the fear dictate our actions or we sabotage ourselves by not partaking in the actions we need to do to move us forward. This is either done consciously or subconsciously, usually the later in which it is even more dangerous to our lives. A great article talks about hwo
So at the end of the day, people really aren’t lazy. The level at which someone looks lazy is the same level they are letting fear dictate their life, in a negative way. Fear can be an insanely positive variable when it comes to accomplishment in this life. If we can get it to push us towards instead of away from our goals, then we can start using this power for good.
So we need to stop seeing ourselves as lazy because this is negative. We just need to realize how much fear is playing a role in our lives and start to use fear as a motivator to get up and go after things in our life.
The guy that works harder than the guy that is labeled lazy is simply acting on his or her fears in a positive way, versus letting it stop them from reaching their full potential.
Even if you play video games all day, or procrastinate all day long because you are scared of going out in the world and failing, you are already doing so through your inaction. I promise you that you will have less regret at the end of your days by going out and failing in this life instead of never taking chances.
Things are so important to us that we are scared to do them. If we see this fact, it seems silly not to move forward. It is just a feeling. It doesn’t have to be a permanent red light. Just see it as a stop sign, stop for a second then move forward. Or if you live in California like me, just foll right through it 😉 like I do on a almost daily basis (had to confess this!)
Quick Tip: Simon Sinek who is an author of several best selling personal devlopment books talks about how he sees fear as excitement instead of fear. This allows him to move forward faster than he would if he just saw it as fear. This internal shift can literally change your life.
5.) Squashing The Feel Of Inadequacy
When it comes down to it, we all have some degree of the feeling of inadequacy. This stems from pretty much any failure that we have had in the past. But it is simply part of life, and in order to break through these feelings of inadequacy, we need to simply acknowledge it and move forward.
We know that we will be good at a certain job, but we don’t do so because of deep rooted insecurities. We simply haven’t cultivated the intrinsic value necessary to move forward. We need to work on building up our self image, which I describe how to do so here: How To Be Confident.
A great article talks about how we can start to stop feeling of inadequacy, a couple tips include:
See Things As Not Yet – The article talks about a TedX talk in which a teacher from a school in Chicago gave students a mark in class that said “not yet” instead of an F. It was a positive remark that was just saying that they are on their way to winning or passing it just hasn’t happened yet. It is switching us from the fixed mindset that happens when we fail a test, to a progressive and persevering mindset.
So instead of seeing ourselves with a fixed mindset, we need to make the shift to seeing ourselves as becoming. Like Will Smith said in an interview, it almost didn’t matter where he was in life, because he was BECOMING. Our possibility for growth is endless and we can start building feelings of adequacy into our beings by starting to see ourselves as “not yet” something but going to be soon.
Stop Comparing Yourself To Pop Culture – The magazines and TV shows portray people with the “perfect” lives and the perfect looks. But it is all an illusion. But this illusion is making people like you and me feel super inadequate as if we don’t live the life these people are living then we are missing the boat. If we aren’t rich, powerful, a supermodel or deeply and madly in love, then we are worthless. Extremely speaking, but to some extent very true for people all around the world.
Taking a step away from comparing ourselves to pop culture icons and families will take the burden off of our backs and allow us to focus on ourselves and compete with ourselves, not someone who “has it all together”.
Just by simply acknowledging that everyone has something they feel inadequate about. But at the same time, millions of people have persevered while feeling inadequate, and went on to do such great things. Some of these people are the ones you are comparing ourselves to. Which if we are going to take anything away from people in the spotlight, it should be the fact that they overcame feelings of inadequacy to rise to the heights they have in their life.
6.) Create A List of The Bad
We can get motivated very fast when we look at the consequences of not doing something, since we are more driven by consequences than we are for awards. Psychology talks about his. How we are much more likely to comply with getting a health exam is we are told how many bad things we can avoid by doing so instead of all the good we will gain from it.
Knowing this, we can stop procrastinating by simply listing out what we will lose if we don’t move forward. Seeing as we can exaggerate situations with ease, as we do when we are scared to move forward. Why not do some reverse psychology on ourselves?
We can list out all that we will lose if we continue to procrastinate, and blow it the hell out of proportion. We can do this to see of course what we have to lose and draw it out to an extent to where use fear of what could happen as a positive motivator. To move forward instead of staying at a stand still.
7.) Get Some Accountability
The power of accountability is massive. Some of the biggest corporations in existence have used it to get off the ground and of course to keep progressing. The biggest stars in the world have coaches who are simply accountability partners. Get one that gets on you for procrastinating. Create accountability so intensely that the actual consequences for procrastinating are horrible! Anything from having to buy your accountability partner a steak dinner to having to pay a month of their mortgage!
Do weekly check-ins with each other through the likes of email or meeting up at a coffee shop on Monday morning to get a jump on your week!
Make sure this person inspires you to take action and isn’t just going through the motions of being an accountability partner. Both of you need to be serious about helping each other quit procrastinating and have good enough reason to do so. You both need to be tired of the effects it has had on your life and ready to quit or drastically lesson this bad habit.
8.) Learning To Love Ourselves
When it comes down to it, we present options to ourselves in which we can choose a good life or create a bad one. We present these opportunities to ourselves daily. We are the boss and the employee. It comes down to how much we like ourselves. The more we like ourselves, the more we want to take action on what we know will further our lives in a direction that we want or at least know we are worth.
The only real way to love ourselves more is to cultivate it from within and the way you do so is to always be feeding your mind with good positive material. We all need to seek growth at all times. You can also do this by asking yourself how you can grow from situations that happen though out your day.
When we don’t think this way, we end up building up resentful feelings, feeling of inadequacy and feels that are in general, holding us back. When we cultivate a feeling of growth and simply curiousity, we can start to grow from our daily existence. This will allow us to become more than we were before, which in turn will grow our sense of self. This will create a better self image to operate off of.
9.) How Much Money Are You Wasting
This one is simple, realize how much money that you are worth per hour. Then add up all the hours of the day that you are wasting and then multiply both those numbers. This can give us a swift kick in the rear and shock us out of the denial that us wasting time isn’t really a big deal. Well it damn for sure is!!
10.) Reward Yourself When Your Are Done
It feels good to get things done. It also feels good to get a reward for getting things done. As you accomplish small wins, reward yourself by getting a coffee, or watching a bit of your favorite show. The more we reward ourselves, the more we will be inclined to stay focused on our tasks because we know there is even more meaning in their accomplishment.
Give yourself mini rewards on the way to the accomplishment of tasks you are procrastinating on, then a big reward when you have finished the entire thing. You can even break each project down into a time specific schedule with deadlines. We all respond very good to deadlines so why not use multiple deadlines on the way? Pick out the part of the task in which you are most looking forward to, there has to be a part of a task that you are more excited about completing, even if it is the worst task ever.
This will get you going. Giving you a bit of momentum to push you forward. You can also use the opposite technique in which you knock out the thing you want to do the least first. This will allow you to see the rest of your tasks in a light that is not as bad as you would if you still had the dreaded task to do. Go off of your own personal style and what would fit you better. Try both and see which one fits your personality type.
11.) Turn Your Phone Off
Let’s be honest with ourselves, out phone is our biggest distraction. Plain and simple. We can instantly be on 10 different social medial platforms. The email alerts alone are enough to send us on a path of productivity destruction. The best thing to do is either power that baby down when you are trying to get in the zone, or simply leave it in another room.
There is an awesome app called Moment in which you can use to minimize the time you use your smartphone to procrastinate with.
It allows you to automatically track the amount of time you are using your phone as well as iPad each day if you have one. You can manually set daily limits that you want to adhere to as far as how much you use your phone. If you go over this, you will be notified. It also allows you to force yourself off your smart phone when you hit your daily limit.
12.) Look Past The Task
We all have tasks that we don’t want to do. But we know we have to get them done. This is just life. But if we look at tasks as a way to get things done so we can enjoy what we really want to do, and do so without guilt, then we are more inclined to just knock them out. We need to look at the bigger picture. Just see tasks you don’t want to to as a means to an end.
13.) Turn Music On
This always helps me. I keep music going in the background. For some reason it grounds me and allows me to enjoy the things on my task list a little more than I would without it. This can be soothing music or it can be uplifting music. Whatever allows you to block out the world and focus on the task at hand. You can also stream white noise, which will allow us to drown out the loud world of distractions around us and allow us to be present with our task.
You can also use the power of binaural beats in order to help you beat procrastination. Here is a great video that can help you with that!
14.) Realize Things Add Up
We make one bad choice, it isn’t a big deal. But if we do so everyday, we one day wake up and our lives are a friggin mess. We need to realize that procrastinating on things in our lives are actually a very big deal. Einstein said that compound interst is the 8th wonder of the world. The only flaw with this is that he didn’t say how it could be the exact opposite when the compound effects have to do with negative things.
In order to harness the power of the compound effect to our advantage, we need to take small steps towards our bigger vision every day. It is like someone who is dieting. Let’s take two people whom of which one decides to cut out 200 calories per day from their diet and the other is isn’t mindless with their diet, whom adds 200 calories a day to their diet.
It won’t make much a of a difference at first, for either. After one month the dieter will be in a caloric deficit of 12,000 calories which equates to about 3 pounds being lost. The non-dieter will be up 3 pounds. Not enough to even see a difference. But after a year of doing so, our dieter is now down 36 pounds and our non dieter has but on 36! This is the power of the compound effect. There is now a 72 pound difference between the two!
Simply look at the task you don’t want to do, then look at how not doing so over and over will put you in a very horrible place a year from now. This fear can be used to our benefit as it will give us a mental and emotion picture of what our lives could end up being. This can give us enough of a push to start taking a bigger amount of daily action.
15.) Be Honest With Yourself
Often times we simply lie to ourselves when it comes to procrastinating on things. We tell ourselves that we have plenty of time to get things done and end up putting them off. Knowing darn well that we really don’t have plenty of time. The clock is ticking my friends. Be honest with yourself.
Your relationship with yourself is the most intimate relationship you will ever have, build a solid foundation with honesty. Realize how little time you have, so you don’t wait until the last minute for everything and try to cram everything is at the end of the day.
16.) See Things As Either Discipline or Regret
When it comes down to procrastinating. We have to choices. To endure the short term effects of pain resulting in having to do the task now, or the long term pain of not doing things, which add up to a lifetime of regret. Now you may be thinking this is a little extreme, but small choices add up. Good and bad. You can either wake up 5 years from now after making a daily series of good choices and your life can be drastically better. Or we can make small bad choices each day, to procrastinate instead of getting things done. Which in 5 years we will wake up to a terrible life we are behind on our bills, our dreams and our relationships,
The thing to realize is that when we make good choices, there is usually no reward right off the bat. As there is with bad choices. For example We are presented with a nice slice of cheesecake after dinner or a glass of water. Choosing the cheesecake is a bad choice but provides reward. Instant gratification if you will. But if you choose the water, you are not rewarded right away. But if you continue to choose water each night instead of desert soon you will lose weight, feel mentally and physically better and better yet callus your mind, making you a more tough and resilient human being.
Oprah talked about how she would count the good decisions she would make, when she choose discipline over instant gratification. She did this as a way to show her all of the “miracles” as she called them. It showed her that she was making strides in the right direction. You can do so to. Count your miracles!
17.) Switch Up Your Environment
Sometimes we just need to get in a different environment in order to get things done. Things become monotonous and boring. Why not give yourself some different stimulation by going and studying in a coffee shop instead of your house, or even out up against a tree in a park? This will give you a different energy to channel your productivity through. Even switching up your position where you are at right now can help. If you like to sit in the back on the coffee shop, move outside and get things done out in front.
Your mind will be excited by this new stimulation which will allow your mind to work faster and more creatively. It may not be that you are dreading the task at hand, it could be that you are dreading doing the task in the same boring environment and you subconsciously hate the way you feel in that environment. You are linking pain and discomfort to tasks for the wrong reason. Food for thought!
18.) Hang Out With Non-Procrastinators
This may be one of the best anti-procrastination tips of all. We become who we hang out with. If we are hanging out with people who will leave a project at the drop of a hat. Or as soon as something more fun comes up they up and leave, we need to start getting more proactive and better friends. Even if these friends have been lifetime buddies. It is necessary to extract the losers out of your life. Without doing so, you will be dragged down with them. If you set standards for changing your life by procrastinating less and the people around you aren’t following suit, then you need to find a new group. Either your current group rises with you, or you get away from them before they drag you down!
19.) See Procrastination as Resistance
The main thing that procrastination is is resistance. When we internalize that fact, we can realize that what we resist ends up persisting. You can literally take your body and then feel the resistance in it, then stop resisting. Simple as that. When you do this, there won’t be internal tension that is keeping your from taking targeted and intense action. Try it out 🙂
Conclusion To How To Not Procrastinate
At the end of the day, when it comes to how to stop procrastinating it all comes down to just taking action. Action is the cure all. When we take action, good things happen. Of course this has to be targeted action, it can’t be displaced. But when we take action we are more forward, we are being progressive.
You can read about all the tools above, but if we don’t take action we will always be victim to the habit of procrastination. So next time you find yourself procrastinating I want you to take action right away towards something that the task that your are procrastinating on. The more you do that, the more you develop the habit of taking action even when you don’t want to.
It is also about not being afraid of how successful we can become if we begin to use our time wisely. It will feel weird at first when you start using your time more effectively. But push through this feeling. You will get to a point where you are almost fighting against time as you know how precious it is. When you get here, things really start getting fun as you will start to become more productive than you ever thought possible.
So instead of using procrastination to run from our full potential, let us use it as an indicator that we need to take action to run towards our full potential! Just a simple shift in perspective!
