How To Stop Wasting Time

“Time = life. Therefore, waste your time and waste your life, or master your time and master your life.” – Alan Lakein
When it comes down how to stop wasting time, you and I can really learn to master our days so that we don’t feel like we have wasted a minute. It is very possible to do so.
If you are like me, you have arrived at the end of the day with the feeling of “What did I do today!?” or “I got nothing done today”.
Well this could be a mix of you and I being high achievers and want more out of life. As well as just not having the tips and tools to really channel our time effectively.
Below are some of the tools I have used to really make the most out of my day each day.
To really get to the end of my day and be proud of myself for really maximizing my time and effectively executing on what I needed to get done.
If you would like to learn how to do the same, check out the list below. I think it will help you a lot
How To Stop Wasting Time In Life (37 Powerful Tricks)
Prudently Track Your Day
People like Gary Vee and Elon Musk literally track their every minute.
That is what it takes to really make good use of your time. What we track we are able to really analyze. If we don’t we can literally waste hours of our days doing meaningless stuff.
Try this for a week. Carry a notebook around and track every 20 minutes of your day, even if you are driving, write “drove to work from 8:50 to 9:00”. Then “got coffee in the break room from 9:00 to 9:05.”
Track every minute, everything you are doing.
Don’t judge or shame your schedule. Just live your life as you usually do. Then when you look back on your days and weeks, you will be able to spot leaky holes in your schedule. Where time is running through.
For example, you may see that at 1:00 PM you crash and end up scrolling on social media for an hour. Well maybe from now on, you need to hydrate and eat a healthy snack at 12:30 so you don’t crash. The instead, schedule something productive you can do during that time slot from now on.
Know Your Goals
Without goals, we are a ship that is drifting out at sea. We have the most powerful engine, the greatest sails as well as the horsepower in us to sail out as far and as long as we want.
And yet if we don’t know where we are going, we will never get there. We will drift around for decades, and get to the end of our life, and call it good.
You and I are not meant to live this way.
What are your goals? If you don’t know them all that well, I wrote a guide on how to set and accomplish goals you can check out right here:
How To Set Goals (And Accomplish Them)
Examples of Goals To Set (201 Examples)
Your goals will do something powerful for you. You will learn to say NO to people when they ask you to do something that isn’t beneficial towards you moving towards a future that is going to offer you more guarantee of hitting your goals.
You will also have something to work towards during those times when you would be wasting time.
Envision your goals and then take action. Schedule a couple minutes, or hours if you can each day towards devoting the time to the accomplishment of your goals.
Baby steps over the long haul add up.
Don’t look at your goals and accomplishing them in the form of a day, a month or a year. Look at your goals and visions in 10 year time frames. This will give you the feeling of being in it long term.
Even a year isn’t enough to accomplish most of our goals. We need to expand our reality of how long it could take. 10 years seems like a long time. But it will come and go regardless. So commit to doing things for a decade. And you will reach your goals and dreams this way.
Meditate
It is crazy, speaking from personal experience, how much meditation helps me focus for long periods of time.
It seems to me, nowadays, that if I mediate for 20 minutes that I get 2-3 hours of targeted focus.
Give it a try. Mediate. Just watch your breathe or say “Om” for 20 minutes straight. Then immediately afterwards, jump right into what you need the most focus on for that day.
You can meditate anytime, any day. So whenever you need to get things done, you can snap off a quick meditation session and I promise you, it will let you get more done and stop wasting time.
Act When You Don’t Feel Like It
Look, I know you know this, I know I know it. And the fact of the matter is, we need to keep hearing it. The biggest waster of time, is simply this, not doing the things we need to because we don’t feel like it.
I am going to give you some tough love here, most days we will not feeling like doing the things we need to get done.
Our bodies will be tired, our minds are gassed out. But we need to act regardless. Be OK with only going through the motions and not feeling like a total rockstar.
The more you and I act when we don’t feel like it, the more it becomes part of our identity. We will see ourselves as people who take action no matter what. And that is a powerful character trait to have.
Anytime you feel like you are “wasting time” act upon something that will make you feel productive.
Analyze Your Day Each Night
Self evaluation is very powerful. Look back on each day before you go to sleep each night. Identify chinks in your armor.
We all have them. Don’t judge yourself. Just evaluate like you are looking at a friends day and trying to help your friend with time management.
Break your day into quarters. We are all up about 16 hours a day give or take.
What did you do good the first 4 hours that you can improve upon. Start with that and give yourself credit.
Next what could you do better than you may have slacked on that same 4 hours. Again go into this part with a growth mindset.
Not only should you not feel bad about not hitting the mark, you should feel incredible as you are now learning yourself and how to better yourself. A feat most people never take on in this life.
Take Naps
The power of a nap. I never thought I would say this. Honestly I always felt as if you just need to power through your day and keep going. But even Nascar, the fastest cars in the world, take a pit stop.
It is a quick mental power down. 10 to at very most 25 minutes. Induce a nice snooze. It is like you wake up to a whole entirely new day.
You will get more done and feel more energized, allowing you to enjoy the work you are doing as well. Which in turn, when we enjoy what we are doing more, we will be more efficient.
Side Hustle
When it comes to how to stop wasting time, if you are like me, then you can only focus on one thing for a certain amount of time. Then you are gassed. Mentally drained of doing that thing.
And you know what my friend, that is perfectly OK. Let’s let go of the idea that you need to focus on one thing for countless hours each day.
If you can’t do so, that is perfectly fine. You just aren’t wired that way. And the only reason we feel that we should be the opposite is because ONE person had that opinion ONE TIME and it became a popular quote that permeated the online universe.
You and I are different and that is completely fine.
So when it comes down to it, when you are lagging in one area, or have time to kill, focus on your side hustle. I obviously blog on the one you are reading right now. But I also have an Instacart account in which I drop off peoples orders here and there throughout the day.
In the hours that I would be wasting, essentially starting at a wall, I run orders. I make 50-150 dollars a day doing it! And guess what? When you are making money, you stop wasting time and start using your time wisely. Very wisely.
You can literally pay your rent/mortgage with a side hustle, part time. Sometimes A LOT more.
Stay In The Moment
Jim Rohn said once:
“When you are at the office, be at the office. When you are at the beach, be at the beach.”
Because often times you and I are at the office thinking about the beach. And at the beach we are thinking about what we need to be getting done at the office.
Point being, you and I need to focus on being here, now. Because when we are present, we get more done. As our focus is very targeted.
The more you think about the past and future, the more you drain your energy and capability in the now.
The more you center yourself in the moment, the more capable you are of reaching your maximum potential.
So I commit with you, that we both will simply do our absolute best to worry about what we need to worry about, when we need to worry about it! How about that?
Execute on what is in front of you. Pay no mind to what is behind, ahead, to your sides, above or below. Only in front.
This will help you stop wasting time and use it to the best of your ability.
Envision Your Goals For The Next Day (At Night)
When we dwell upon our goals each night and each morning, we are literally programming our subconscious mind to attract that which we desire.
Because the more we do this, the more we are coming into harmony with the things that are in harmony with our major and chief objectives in life.
I know you have heard the greats say that they envisioned playing or singing or performing in front of sold out crowds. And then one day, their dream became a reality.
Well let me be the one to break it to you my friend, you are great too. You have this capability to envision a future and watch it manifest. It isn’t reserved for the greats among us.
And just to sell you a little bit on why I think envisioning power is out of this world and downright godlike.
Just think if an acorn right now. It has genetic potential but will disinegrate if it is not put into a vibrational field that is in rapport with it. AKA the nutrients in the dirt.
Well when you envision your goals, your goal is the acorn, and outside yourself, the things in harmony with it will start moving their way towards you to fulfill and bring to life your goal.
Just like the nutrients in the dirt do so towards and into the acorn.
If you would like to learn how to envision your goals, I wrote an article just for you to teach you how to do so like a master.
This will help you stop wasting time and start making time work for you. As all you have to do is envision your goals with regularity, and then on autopilot, your mind will bring about all the things you need in this life to achieve your goals. Now that is REAL leverage!
Read
Reading and consuming good content is a great use of time. Pick up a book that will help you get better in your profession or a self help book that will allow you to grow as a person.
Here is a list of books that I have read that have drastically altered my mindset and made me into a more positive and happy person. Check it out, I know they can help you too.
The Best Self Help Books of All Time
Have it on you and pick up where you left off whenever you have down moments. This will allow you to fill in your time gaps with productivity and growth.
Prep Your Meals
When it comes down to it, we spend hours upon hours each week cooking our meals if we do so at home.
If we are eating out, then we are wasting a lot of money we could be using to put away towards savings and long term wealth.
As well as if you and I are eating out too much, we aren’t eating good enough to feel our best.
When we cook our meals at home, we can store away days or a week of meals. Freeze or refrigerate them and take them to work with us and warm them up for dinner.
It can save you a lot of time. And best yet, you can become more healthy through the sheer fact that you are now dictating what goes into your body.
Food is energy, it has vibration just like everything else. Good and healthy food will make every single cell in your body vibrate better and more efficiently and positively, making you feel better every second of every day. As well as be more productive in your life as when you feel better you do better.
Workout
Whether you are getting a run in or lifting weights or both, working out can add a massive amount of energy to your day.
For me, it is literally a saving grace. It adds energy and productivity and focus to my day.
Most people say they don’t have time to workout, I don’t have time not to. I truly believe I increase my energetic capacity by hours just from working out.
If I didn’t workout each day, I would burn out much earlier in the day.
I strongly suggest you take on this productivity hack to help you stop wasting your time.
Listen to Classical Music
Have you every noticed how you are listening to a Mozart song, basking in the glory of a legend at work. And you naturally feel more calm and even energized? Classical music has been shown to increase productivity.
Don’t Fear Failure
When it comes to stoping wasting time, we need to be doing away with fearing failure. There is no real failure unless you completely stop trying.
There is no failure, only feedback. If something doesn’t workout the first time, then that is OK. Evaluate what you did good, and then what you can improve upon.
Seeing it this way, you can never be a failure.
And just because you failed at doing something in the past, doesn’t make you a failure. Re-read that if you have to, it is the truth my friend. Let it sink in.
So the biggest waster of time is not trying when we should be. Just know that through the power of perseverance, you will have some sort of success. If you just keep going, good things will happen.
Play the rocking chair game. When you are sitting in your rocking chair at the end of your life, do you want to have regrets that you didn’t do things? Or do you want to laugh and be proud about the things you attempted and accomplished. Live full, die empty. Give it all you have.
Once you get over the fear of failure, nothing in life can stop you. The more you act in spite of your fears, the more you build courage. And the more courage you build, the less fearful you will be in situations that used to paralyze you with fear.
Set Deadlines With Consequences
At a certain point, we need to be couching ourselves to greatness. It is great to hire a coach and mentor, and yet we can’t have them around 24/7.
We need to create a sense of urgency in our lives. And that is done by setting up deadlines and having consequences if we don’t hit them.
I am not saying that if you don’t hit your deadlines, and yet you are giving everything that you have, that you should be punished. But I think you and I should have consequences for not going as hard as we can, and hence missing our deadline because of it.
The school of life has consequences for not getting your work in on time. It is best to really push ourselves to be getting things done everyday within certain time gaps.
It gives us the feeling that the clock is ticking. And that we are, in a sense, running out of time.
Which brings us to our next tip on how to stop wasting time.
Even use timers for things in your life. Set a timer for an hour, go hard until the timer rings, take a small mental break with a nice walk, then set a timer on your next thing you need to get done that day.
Realize You Are Going To Die
I am just as guilty of acting like I am going to live forever as the next person. But after someone in my life passed away in the past, I truly realized that I am going to be in the same boat one day.
We are all walking towards the grave, one day at a time. It is the truth.
Realize, that we have one less day every day, when it comes to a close. That our life is ending one minute at a time.
So if we are wasting time, we are wasting our life. Let that sink in. When you waste time, either intentionally or non-intentionally, recognize that you are wasting your life.
Really internalize that. This should give you motivation to act and get things done.
Certain People Just Have To Go
Have you ever noticed that people who like wasting time, like to do it with you?? There are certain people in this life who just want to wade their way through their existence. Not a lot of get up and go.
They are the people who get mad at you when you are behind them, because they are going slow and they don’t like it they you want to get to where you want to go faster!
These are people who have no real purpose in their lives.
They can be great people, don’t get me wrong. And at the same time, they can truly be an anchor on your boat.
And we don’t want to make them feel bad my being to pushy, so naturally we fall in to rapport with them by not doing much too when they are around.
Surround yourself with goal oriented people. Link up with the doers in this life. The big thinkers, the big action takers. The people who want to leave a dent in this universe.
You and I become like the people we hang out with. Lets make sure we are using our circle to create a powerful source of inspiration and drive in our life.
Stay in Motion
An object in motion tends to stay in motion. The more we take breaks, the more we have to stop and restart. This takes time and energy.
Look, it is nice to feel rested and nourished. Use your day off to really soak in relaxation. On the days you are working, staying moving stay busy, stay in execution mode. When you stay in this mode, you are more mentally alert.
You internalize that you won’t be stopping and starting, so your mind and body are more apt to provide you with energy you need to stay moving and getting things done.
Get Rid Of Distractions
The fact of the matter is, we actually get a hit of dopamine every time we check social media and see that someone has liked our post or viewed our story!
This is why it is so hard to stop scrolling. It is activating the reward center in our brains. Similar to a drug. I have definitely felt the feeling of being addicted to social media.
And yet, it is a huge distractor.
At one point in my life, I actually was so broke that I had to use a flip phone to save money on my phone bill! This was in the Iphone 8 days!
I got WAY more done when I had this phone as there was less distractions. Texting took longer so I barely even texted. I would just call people, that is about it!
The point I am making, is that our smart phones are smart enough to keep us extremely distracted in our lives.
Try turning your notifications off until you get off of work. Or only having them on for an hour in the morning and an hour at night. Just to give your body and mind a break from the distractions.
You will get much more done. As every time we are distracted, it takes a while before we are able to get back in the zone on what we were working on beforehand. These little time gaps on starting and stopping add up to minutes and hours wasted throughout the day.
Have An Accountability Partner
Who in your life is the most goal oriented person you know? Whoever it is, pitch them the idea that you want to do daily or weekly check ins with each other.
When we know we have someone to answer to on how we have done all week, we will naturally do better. Because we want to save face and not have to look bad in front of someone else.
This can push you to get more done and not waste time.
Stick To A Schedule Every Single Day
The body is like a machine that we can tune to work just the way we want and need it to work. The body does great with schedules and routines.
If your body knows you are going to be working out at 2 everyday, it will naturally become more mentally and physically ready to do so.
I work out each morning at 6. I get it done so it is over with. At first, my body felt like garbage. I felt groggy and unmotivated. But the more I showed up consistently, the better and more ready I felt when I got to the gym and throughout my workout.
Now, when I compare my old routine of working out pretty much whenever, to my new one, I feel so much better and have better workouts.
The point I am trying to make to you is that we need to prime ourselves for getting things done. And that is done by doing things at the same time each day, every day. And continue to do so until it becomes a subconscious habit.
This is where the power comes in as you don’t even think about it anymore, you just get it done. This can be a big time saver.
It may be boring, but at the end of the day, an undisciplined life is an insane life. The more discipline you have, the more freedom you have. It sounds counterintuitive but it is true. You are honing your life in. You are not just responding to life. You are making life respond to you.
Have 3 Chief Objectives Each Day
This can be working out, spending time with kids or your spouse and work. Set time slots to do these 3 things each day. And then do them.
You will feel more productive and not waste time as you are doing things that both give your life meaning and good feelings. As well as give you a feeling of growth in your life. Both of which leave you more fulfilled. Hence them more fulfilled you feel, the less you feel like you are wasting your time.
Dress For Productivity
There is something about just dressing up and the feeling you get versus wearing casual clothes. You look like a productive person when you put intention into what you are wearing.
Get down to the nitty gritty. Match your clothing. Wear one article that ups your dress game. A tie, a handkerchief or a nice hat.
Something that will set you apart from the crowd a bit more than usual. It will set you apart. Making you feel a little more proud to be you and in your own skin. You will feel celebrity-ish. In the best sense of the term, above it all a bit, to where you feel like you are just more of a high achiever.
Stop Working At the Same Time Each Day
The fact of the matter is, when you and I don’t know when we are getting off, we don’t get as much done. As in the back of our minds, we justify staying longer as we feel that if we have a longer day, we can get everything done.
This is just not the case. If we know we are getting off at 5, we will use our time wisely in order to get everything done so we can get off at 5.
Now of course you and I aren’t going to get everything done in our day, this just won’t happen. And yet, it can be a powerful productivity tip as we are not letting our day run us, we are running our day.
Have A Reset Button
I talked about napping above. But for you it may be reading or journaling, going for a jog, working out.
Have multiple different reset buttons that you can hit when you are getting a little gassed out on what you are working on.
Hit the reset button, do so until you can mentally get back into gear and be productive on the tasks you need to be getting done.
Log Out of Your Accounts
Lets face it, we all want to take the path of least resistance. When we log out of our Youtube, Facebook, Instagram and other online accounts, it takes extra effort to log back in.
It may sound silly, but I know I have given up on logging in when I have been logged out automatically in the past. It may look lazy, but human beings, again seek the path of least resistance.
Knowing this fact, we can use it to our advantage. Also, you can use incognito windows when you do use the internet so that the internet can’t track your usability. So when you are on sites that normally would be advertising or working in a way that stimulates your needs and wants, you won’t be victim to this.
It can save you from being distracted, both of these tips. Hence helping you stop waste time.
Keep One Tab Open At A Time
This goes back to the fact I talked about above where it takes time to start and stop after getting distracted. When we have one window open on our computer or phone, we aren’t thinking about the other windows.
When we have multiple windows open, naturally we are spreading percentages of our brain power over as many windows as we have open.
Keep one window open at a time. When you need to go somewhere else on the internet, do so with the same window.
Engage In Work You Love Doing
The old adage rings true here. If you are doing something you love for work, you never work a day in your life. This is true because it doesn’t really feel like work.
We feel like we are wasting our time in life when we are doing things that aren’t congruent with our needs in life. Spiritually speaking.
What is that one thing in your life that makes you feel like you are using time in the most productive way possible? Make that your life work. Even if you feel like you can’t make it your life work, it is possible. With the internet you can offer coaching services, blog about it and sell advertisement. There is a way, as there is always an audience for every niche.
Life is too short to not being doing things you love. Start out by just doing a little bit of it at first. Then do so more and more. Opportunities will come about, people will see your passion and want to help. And in months or years from now, you can be doing something you love each day and getting paid handsomely for it.
It is possible, just believe and know that.
Listen To Motivational Content
Look, I know motivation doesn’t last, and yet it can help when you are down. The key is to filter it into your day at multiple locations so that you can stay up so you don’t get too down.
Set a timer to take a break every couple hours and then pop in your headphones and listen to motivational content. It will release feel good hormones in your brain and body. Giving you more energy and making you feel more engaged and overall much better.
This can be a like a mini does of caffeine at anytime you want, without the crash!
Keep Your Spaces Clean
Your house, your car and your office. These are the big 3 for you and I. We need to be keeping our big 3 clean. That way we can stay focused. Take everything off your desk and only have what you are working on, on top of your desk.
Give away things in your home that you don’t use. Hire a cleaner to come each month to keep things tidy and clean.
Get your cash washed once a month.
Out outer world dictates how our inner world looks and vice versa. They mirror each other. And the good news is that you can clean one mirror and the other one gets cleaner by default.
Start with the outer world, and your inner world will calm down. This mental calm will allow you to get more done and be more efficient.
Get Past Your Governor
You know the governor in the car? The one that stops you going any faster when you hit a certain speed, say 90 MPH. And yet the car shows on the dashboard that it can go up to 120 MPH? Well the human mind has one of those too.
David Goggins, motivational speaker and super athlete/NAVY SEAL talks about how he feels that when we hit that governor, we have only hit about 40 percent of our capacity.
That we first need to get to that 40 percent, then just go a little bit further.
Every time you do so, you increase your capacity of what you can get done, permanently. You create a new self governor that can now function at its peak at 41, 42, 43 percent.
So in order to start getting more done and stop wasting time permanently, you and I need to stretch ourselves. We need to create new limits for ourselves. As the ones in our life are all self imposed.
At a certain point, we decided what was normal for us, and what was possible. And then we never looked at it again.
But the great thing about stretching our limits, is that once we do so in one area of our life, it becomes much more natural and easy to do so in other areas as well.
So what is one area of your life that you can honestly say that you have created a limit for yourself? Then make it a point to do just a little more the next time you do it.
For example, my limit was that I could only have 50 conversations in one day about real estate via cold calling. Actual conversations, not just dials. Then one day, I decided to do 100. Not 50 feels much easier.
We need to be getting our of our comfort zones and taking our life to the next level.
Set A Timer For Procrastination
Right when you catch yourself procrastinating, set a timer. Let it run. Become aware of the numbers moving along and changing and increasing.
The more you are aware of the fact that you are procrastinating, the more you will take proactive measure to stop the action.
We are making the unconscious conscious. And putting a magnifying glass upon it.
Identify Things In Your Life That You Can Outsource
The fact of the matter is, in life, when we don’t want to do something, we have resistance to it. And when there is resistance, we naturally put it off and dread doing it. Wasting time before actually embarking on doing it.
Then when we do it, it takes longer because our heart and mind are just not into it.
Let’s just take getting groceries for example, you can pay people to go get your groceries. It saves you time that you can put towards more productive things that you actually want to be doing.
Get Your Should’s and Musts Done First
There is only so much time in the day. And only so much energy in our bodies to do all these things in one day.
List out your MUSTS, SHOULD’s, LIKE TO’s, DON’T NEED TO’s.
Then only move on from one category if you have done what you needed in that category. And only then.
That way you get your MUST’s done, the most important things. Then you can feel good about going into your SHOULD’s, knowing that you don’t have to think about getting your MUST’s done any longer.
Don’t Try To Multi-Task
Slow down a bit. Focus on one thing at a time, use your time wisely and honed in and intensely.
I know it feels like we can get more done when we are multi-tasking but this is an illusion. Your productivity as well as your accuracy goes down.
This means only using one device at one time too. Either you are on the phone or on the computer, or only on the computer and not watching TV at the same time.
Focus on one thing then move onto the next thing. This will allow you to stay in the zone and get in more effective work.
Just Get Started
Fear of starting is the biggest thing that gets in the way of us getting more done and not wasting time.
Commit to just doing something for a minute or two. This will snowball into 5 minutes and then ten and then an hour!
Just get the ball rolling. Gain a little momentum. And if for whatever reason you aren’t feeling it after 2 minutes, start up again on something else for two minutes and come back to the other task later.
The point is, for you and I to get the ball rolling and instead of stalling, we just slightly get the wheels turning. Momentum will often times do the rest of the heavy lifting for us.
Be VERY Hard On Yourself
Look, in this life, everyone wants to sugarcoat things. We hang out with people who tell us what we want to hear, not what we need to hear. We aren’t facing our dark side.
When we look in the mirror, we need to be completely honest with ourselves, that is how growth takes place.
We can only get to the next version of ourselves if we face our inadequacies. That is done by being brutally honest.
Don’t sugar coat things to yourself. Don’t be OK with mediocre. Tell yourself you have a problem, admit the problem, then execute daily on counteracting the problem.
You and I both know what we need to do when it comes to us asking the question of “how do I stop wasting my time”. We just need to be bold and courageous enough to be real with ourselves and tell ourselves that we SUCK at something. Full disclosure with ourselves will get us a very long way in this life.
Admit it and then change.
And again, if you don’t get the things you need to get done, then no going out this weekend. No cheat meals. Etc. Drive yourself to greatness with your own punishment and reward system.
